Being Happy Is A Skill.
It's not luck of the draw, nor is it simply the things that happen to us in life. I know people who have lives many of us would envy, but happiness still alludes them. I've seen children in poverty still finding reasons to dance and laugh. Happiness happens when we decide to focus on things that will make us happy.
Appreciate, give value to what you already have. As the pace of life gets quicker, we take less and less time to simply stop and enjoy all the wonderful things that are happening. Instead, we find ourselves competing and comparing ourselves with those around us, and that rarely results in any happiness. Our lives are simply what we focus on, and if we have a negative focus, then don't be surprised when life feels the same way.
Nothing good comes from feeling sorry for yourself. Seeing yourself as a victim of life won't do much to improve things. Take responsibility for your happiness, and then you'll actually find some power to make better.
Being happy is a skill, and like any skill, it requires practice, the earlier we start, the better off we are.

Learn From Your Past
Stop trying to erase the mistakes of the past. Those mistakes are only painful and worthless until we decide that we want to learn from them. I understand the pain can be immense, and we just want to do anything we can to make it go away, but that's not how life works.
As individuals, and a species, we're special because we've been able to learn from our mistakes, and even pass the wisdom on to future generations; it's one of the reasons we make so much progress.
We're so afraid of making mistakes, we can sometimes stay frozen and opt to do nothing, but what good is that? We win some, and we learn some. When we try to suppress our past, we're causing damage, mentally, physically. Things build up, and that may inspire us to make some irresponsible decisions.
Let it out, and let it go. I know that's easier said than done, but at the very least, committing to try puts us in a better position to heal and learn from out past.

Never Stop Learning
Admitting we know nothing, makes room for us to learn anything. A closed mind can't be taught, and that's the danger of thinking we have any or all of the answers. I don't like to look at life as a problem to be solved, but rather an experience to be had; it's much more exciting that way. Life can be frustrating, and that will naturally make us want to seek guidance from others. The reality with that however, is that people may have great experiences and wisdom to share, but they're still in the same boat as the rest of us. The questions will always be more important than the answers, never blindly follow those before you, but rather seek what they're seeking. It's a scary thought to have, and it's why we turn to those before us for guidance and wisdom, because after all, they seem to be doing alright. Those feelings are normal.
